How a Good Dental Implant Match is Made to Your Own Teeth

Will the new tooth match the rest of my teeth? Will it be the same shape, size, and color?

These are questions most patients, just like you, have when thinking about getting implants.

Not to worry. You’re going to like the answers and they’re all right here. Certainly, looking good while receiving dental implants, especially for the front of your mouth, is of utmost importance. While the implant posts are settling in, a custom temporary crown is placed to fill in the spot. The temporary crown also is the blueprint for the final crown.

This allows several of the criteria for success to be worked out ahead of time. This is when the color and shape along with compatibility with the gum tissues and smile line, speech, and biting function are considered. There are many colors and shades available making a perfect match possible for your teeth.

Choice of crown materials, color matching, even the dental laboratory technician are all mechanical and artistic ingredients that go into the mix before determining a perfect match for your mouth. This takes a special skill and expertise that lead to a good corresponding implant-supported crown to adjacent natural teeth.

Implant to implant match

The picture changes when it comes to placing implants next to implants, in addition to adjacent teeth. The distance between the implants and the shape and size of the implants then become even more critical. This takes extra expertise, and, in fact, it may not be possible to completely regenerate natural looking papillae between the implants relative to the natural teeth. With that said, the difference is often times so small, it is barely noticeable.

Here’s the Difference Between Dental Implants, Porcelain Veneers and Crowns

You may have heard your friends and family talking about crowns or veneers and implants when it comes to having their teeth fixed. But these are three different types of restorations. Each one is meant for different forms of issues a patient might have.

So, let’s take a look at each one and what they fix.

Crowns are used to repair damaged teeth you may have. You may have had a root canal or have a really large filling or some of the tooth has broken as the reason your tooth is damaged. However, the underlying part of the tooth, where the root is, remains in good condition. It’s just the outside of the tooth that needs repaired. In this case, a crown is a way of bringing back the shape and the appearance and the strength to a natural tooth.

Veneers are similar to crowns in that they return some strength and the natural appearance to teeth. It’s a more conservative type of restoration. It’s used when you don’t have a seriously damaged underlying tooth and just want to make a change in the way the tooth looks. The veneer simply gives you a new outer cover to the front of the tooth. It’s the part that we see but leaves the tooth alone and fully intact on the inside of the patient’s mouth.

Implants are used when you have a missing tooth or one that is so badly damaged it had to be removed. Since there is no part of the tooth to attach anything too, this is when an implant can be used as a way to return a supporting structure to a part of the mouth that needs a tooth. Once that implant is placed, we’re able to put a crown on top of it that will match the natural teeth around it or that will match other crowns and veneer that are nearby.

These are the three ways to return your mouth to a stable and healthy smile.

Patients, just like you, have these procedures done all the time here at Happy Sapiens Dental Clinic and it’s really a lot of fun to see them get back the mouth that they had before there was a problem.

Which Comes First! The Implant or the Braces?

This is another classic “it depends” answer. Every dental implant and orthodontic case is different, with varying conditions, and goals for the outcome.

Most often, however, it is best to move the teeth to an ideal position (orthodontics) creating the appropriate spaces and anatomy, then place the implant.

However, it is quite common that dental implants are used as anchors for the orthodontic treatment. And, in those cases, the implants are placed first.

With that all said, generally speaking, it’s best to complete orthodontic treatment first before implants are placed.

The only exception is if the orthodontic treatment does not involve the teeth surrounding or opposing the implants. For example, some patients only require orthodontic treatment to align the front teeth while the back teeth are not changed. If the patient has a missing tooth in the back, it can be placed earlier. This can be verified by the orthodontist.

The other exception is when a dental implant is placed as an anchor to help the orthodontist with certain teeth movements.

Because everything is done in-house, we at Happy Sapiens Dental Clinic can help design a precise treatment plan from start to finish.

For your particular case, we’ll know which should come first.

Yes. More Than One Implant Is Possible

In some instances, it might be necessary to have more than one implant to replace more than just one tooth.

So, to answer the question if this is possible, the answer is Yes! Although it does depend on the overall health of your mouth.

If your mouth is healthy enough to undergo the procedure, you can have any number of your teeth individually replaced. Putting a post and a crown to fill in the empty holes where needed.

However, if you’re looking to replace all of your top or bottom teeth, in addition to the normal dentures, implants can be an option for that too. Known as the All-on-4 procedure, this is when an arch of 14 teeth are attached on as little as four implants.

Speak to your dentist to determine the right plan to achieve your desired results and if this is a good choice for you.

Dental Implants – Cost and Insurance

Many people call and ask us, How much is one implant going to cost? And this may very well be a question at the top of your list too.

I wish it was that simple to answer with a flat fee number. But it isn’t.

Obviously, costs vary greatly depending on your needs and desires. The only way to determine actual cost is by coming in for a consultation and examination to find out if you have bone loss or if you’ll need one, two, or more implants.

However, if you read through all the letters we get from patients, you will find a couple who chose to get implants as an anniversary present to each other and postponed a cruise they originally were going to take. The implants were much more meaningful to them.

Like that couple, if you think about it, a cruise or other trip ends after 5-7days. Or you can purchase more stuff for the house. However, is that really as important as the very best appearance possible and the best possible health? So yes, you will need to look at implants as an investment, because it really is a significant decision but one that will add value to your life forever.

A healthy mouth or magnificent dazzling smile pays dividends in many ways for your entire life.

If your primary concern is the lowest possible investment, then dental implants are probably not for you.

If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a reasonable investment and a fair price for the best possible outcome, the least pain and discomfort, the gentlest care and highest degree of expertise and professionalism, then implants are for you.

Incidentally, a variety of payments plans are available. Of course, all major credit cards are accepted, so you can get your airline miles or reward points. Some patients report they received 5 days in a top resort with the reward points on their credit card. Expert assistance in obtaining reimbursements from your insurance provided free of charge.

Sedation Dentistry and How It Can Take the Fear Out of Your Visits

Now, don’t judge but I’m scared to death of the dentist. What if I need extensive work or implants? What are my options?Says many people everywhere.

And there is a way you can finally reclaim your health and your good looks with the miracle of sedation for dentistry.

Here’s some helpful info to ease those fears.

What Is Sedation For Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a safe, comfortable way to completely relax during your dental appointments. It sounds impossible to believe, but with this technique, you really can actually sleep right through a dental visit.

Depending on the level of sedation chosen, you may or may not actually fall asleep, but you will experience a deep feeling of calm and peace. Combined with the careful application of a numbing agent to any sensitive areas, you’ll experience a comfortable relaxing session.

What Does Sedation Feel Like?

Simply put if feels like a catnap. You’re not unconscious, but you’re pleasantly dozing as though in a half-awake, half-dream state.

Most patients report feeling just unaware enough to be calm and relaxed. And when it’s over you’ll feel refreshed, with little or no memory of the treatment performed.

Deeper levels of sedation are also available, where you are completely unconscious. This type of sedation is useful for more complex procedures or for children who need a lot of dentistry done in one visit.

Whatever is best for you to have a good appointment is what your dentist should do. With all of the new techniques and methods available today, there’s no reason for you to fear going to the dentist any longer.

What You Need to Know About the Time it Takes to Get Implants!

If you’re considering having dental implants, the first concern you might express is about how much time it takes.

What is the recovery period? Will you need to miss work? These are the 2 most common questions.

To put your mind at ease, here’s what you need to know.

The procedure happens in two steps:

First Implant placement – While the implants (the posts inserted into the jaw) need between 6 to 16 weeks to secure in the mouth, there should be little to no downtime for you.

You might experience a mild soreness or swelling for the first few days. It’s nothing an over-the-counter pain reliever can’t handle. Also, a diet of soft foods and liquids for the first few days to a week or so might be recommended.

Once the implants have healed, you’ll be ready for phase two.

Second Placement of the crowns – That’s the whole next step. You will simply have the crowns placed over the implant posts and secured into place.

As you can tell, there really is no reason not to get them if you want and need them. The longest time involved is the time it takes for the implants to secure in place. In the meantime, you can go about your normal activities.

Who CAN’T Get Implants?

In general, most people between the ages of 18 and on up are good candidates to get implants. However, some circumstances may need careful consideration before proceeding. Here are a few of the most common circumstances:

  • Someone who has significant periodontal disease. The disease might also affect an implant.
  • People whose healing process has been compromised through certain chronic diseases or medications may find implant placement would need to be carefully considered and monitored.
  • Someone who has been taking bisphosphonates for an extended period of time as a treatment for osteoporosis may not be a candidate for implants. They should consult with their physician and their dentist to discuss the option.

Again, while most adults can get dental implants, it is highly recommended that anyone considering dental implants, consult with their dentist before proceeding. Every person’s mouth is different and only you and your dentist can determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for dental implants.
