Here's the Difference Between Dental Implants, Porcelain Veneers and Crowns

You may have heard your friends and family talking about crowns or veneers and implants when it comes to having their teeth fixed. But these are three different types of restorations. Each one is meant for different forms of issues a patient might have.

So, let's take a look at each one and what they fix.

Crowns are used to repair damaged teeth you may have. You may have had a root canal or have a really large filling or some of the tooth has broken as the reason your tooth is damaged. However, the underlying part of the tooth, where the root is, remains in good condition. It's just the outside of the tooth that needs repaired. In this case, a crown is a way of bringing back the shape and the appearance and the strength to a natural tooth.

Veneers are similar to crowns in that they return some strength and the natural appearance to teeth. It's a more conservative type of restoration. It's used when you don't have a seriously damaged underlying tooth and just want to make a change in the way the tooth looks. The veneer simply gives you a new outer cover to the front of the tooth. It's the part that we see but leaves the tooth alone and fully intact on the inside of the patient's mouth.

Implants are used when you have a missing tooth or one that is so badly damaged it had to be removed. Since there is no part of the tooth to attach anything too, this is when an implant can be used as a way to return a supporting structure to a part of the mouth that needs a tooth. Once that implant is placed, we're able to put a crown on top of it that will match the natural teeth around it or that will match other crowns and veneer that are nearby.

These are the three ways to return your mouth to a stable and healthy smile.

Patients, just like you, have these procedures done all the time here at Happy Sapiens Dental Clinic and it's really a lot of fun to see them get back the mouth that they had before there was a problem.
